This site started in 1999 as a personal site about recreational small boat owners. My focus was to build a place where people could share stories, jokes and help promote boating safety.
In 2001 several members asked me to add a printable calendar so that they, their family and friends could plan trips on the water.
I searched the Web for a simple printable calendar site with the idea of linking to that site. After hours of looking it was clear that my idea of a simple usable calendar did not exist. So, out of frustration and a lot of trial and error, I built what I was looking for on this site.
Soon Yahoo, Google and several other search engines indexed the calendar and it started showing up when people searched for a printable calendar. That's when things started getting a little crazy.
As the traffic increased and the calendar type requests grew the cost of running and maintaining the site, not to mention calendar development time, also grew.
Not wanting to set a price for the calendar and in the true spirit of the All-Volunteer Yacht Club, "AVYC" (That's the name of the original site) I set up the web's first and only calendar to print on the honor system.
Over the years, with the expansion of the Internet and the advent of other types of calendar sites, things have settled down to what I consider a more reasonable pace! But, with all the calendars and the pages we have added, trying to manage both the calendar and boat club pages on one domain became a little confusing to our visitors and, frankly, for us too.
By mid 2010 A.V.Y.C. moved back to its - Original 1999 Domain - leaving that interloper calendar here to its own devices.
So that's how a nice printable calendar hijacked a boat club site.... Sometimes things just happen!
